I designed these simple stories to use with students who need picture support or  that have Augmentative and Alternative Devices (AAC), specifically voice output devices or speech generating devices. They can also be used with ANY young child working on beginning story comprehension skills.

These are great for speech therapy sessions and also for special education teachers to use for language arts. This product was inspired by one of my students who had a goal of answering story comprehension questions (main idea and supporting details). I didn't have anything structured for this, so I created this (these are very short stories for students who are not ready for full books yet). I expanded it to use with a variety of my students and I hope you will find it useful! They can also be used with any student that you want a verbal response from (preschool or young language students).

The stories are repetitive and were written to help cue the AAC user to where they need to find the response on their device (category, folder, etc). All of the stories contain easily recognizable vocabulary and are also great for working on WH questions. This activity will help build story comprehension skills in a simplified, structured way (you will notice that the subject of the story is repeated purposely).

Level 1 stories are 2-3 sentences with one question (main subject)
Level 2 stories are 4-5 sentences with 3 questions (main subject + 2 details)
Level 3 stories are 5-6 sentences and have more details than level 2 with 4 questions (main subject + 3 details).

I included color and black & white pictures to go along with each story to use if desired (each story and picture have corresponding number). You can use the black & white picture as a coloring sheet after the story.

I also included BONUS core/fringe vocabulary boards for each story for students who need low tech boards.

Each story in all 3 levels come in 2 versions:
  1. Dot answer (the student responds and then dots the circle).
  2. Picture choice answer (the student responds and then dots/colors the correct answer).
What you will get:
  • 20 stories with dot responses (the student will respond with their AAC device/board and then dot the circle on the page).
  • 20 stories with picture choice responses (the student will respond with their AAC device/board and then dot/color the correct picture on the page).
  • 20 full colored illustrations that go with each story.
  • 20 black & white illustrations that go with each story.
  • 20 core/fringe vocabulary boards that go with each story.
  • 2 Data sheets (group and individual)
To clarify: there are only 20 total stories in this set. They come in 3 levels and 2 response choices.

To use: Choose a story and read it to the student. The object is for them to respond to the question with their AAC device or orally. They can also respond by pointing to the included core/fringe vocabulary board. After they respond, the student can dot the circle (or picture answer) with a bingo dotter (or color it in with a crayon/marker). Place a check mark in the box if if the student responds correctly. There are also boxes to mark the level of assistance that was needed.

Independent: The student responded with their AAC device (or verbally) without assistance. They were able to locate the folder/button on their own.
Needed Cueing: The therapist/teacher had to cue the student where to look to find the needed word on their AAC device (or a verbal cue was given).
Needed Model: The therapist/teacher modeled the response on the student’s AAC device (or gave a verbal model). I have the student repeat the model afterwards.

Variations: You can modify the question or ask your own question if desired. If you want to tie in other story element questions, you could ask the following questions with each story (the questions included are simple and specific).
  1. What was the main problem of the story?
  2. What is the setting of the story?
  3. Who is/are the character(s)?
  4. Ask about other small details in the story.
