This is a simple no prep cut & paste activities to target basic categories. I included basic categories (level 1) and subcategories (level 2). Categorization is an essential skill that lays the foundation for defining, describing, and comprehension skills.
To use: Choose the desired page. I have my students name the pictures and color them to begin (optional). The student will cut out the pictures and glue them under the correct category cloud.
Take it a step further: To work on defining/describing skills, after the child sorts the item, ask them to name a defining feature or attribute of the item. Example: After sorting the elephant you could ask “name two things about an elephant” (such as: it is big and has a trunk). This will help build defining skills.

❅ 11 Snowstorm Categories: Students will name the objects and color them to begin (optional). Students will cut out the snowflake pictures and glue them under the correct cloud category. Two levels: Level 1- major category with image clue on the clouds/Level 2- subcategories or attributes with no image clue.

❅ 5 Snowflake Category Challenge: Students will try to name as many items in the given category and dot a snowflake for each item they name (divergent naming).

❅ 4 Snowflake Search: Students will find the item that does not belong and draw an ‘X’ over it. They will color the remaining items and explain how they go together. Two levels: Level 1- obvious difference/Level 2: subcategories and less obvious.

❅ 5 Snowflake Dots: Students will dot the snowflakes according to the key (example: blue-animals, green-plants, red-food, etc….). Two levels: Level 1- major categories/Level 2- subcategories or less obvious.

❅ 5 Snowflake Go-Togethers: Students will draw a line between items that go together and explain why (optional: color each pair a different color).

❅ 1 BONUS Hidden Pictures Categories coloring page. Students will color in the sections of the picture according to the categories key to reveal a mystery winter picture.
