Mythical Creatures Articulation to go with Miss Turie's Magical Creatures Book Companion

This activity was designed to be a simple, no-prep activity to target articulation in an engaging way while reading the book “Miss Turie’s Magical Creatures”or while learning about mythical creatures. This pack includes the following sounds: initial/final: p, b, m; final: n, t, d; initial/medial/final: k, g, f, v, s, z, ch, j, th, sh; pre-vocalic r; vocalic r (er, ar, or, air, ear, ire); rblends; lblends; sblends (separate mats for sp, st, sm, sn, sk, sl, sw, final, mixed). First practice, then color or dot a magical creature! It also includes full color mythical creature cards to use if you don’t own the book. There are also two blank/open-ended pages to use with any speech or language target.

 Materials Needed: Miss Turie’s Magical Creatures Book by Joy Keller. If you don’t have the book I included full color magical creatures flash cards (that match the creatures on the worksheet) that you can use with these pages. You will also need one of the Magical Creatures articulation pages by target phoneme.

 Magical creatures featured: hippocamp, hydra, pegasus, unicorn, Cerberus, Loch Ness monster, Sasquatch, dragon, phoenix, golem, kraken, griffin, and chimera

 To use: There are many ways you could uses these pages. I am going to list how I use them!

1. Read the book Miss Turie’s Magical Creatures. Each time you find one of the magical creatures in the book, stop and find tell the students to find it on their articulation page. Have the student practice the articulation word (the therapist will determine the number of trials) and dot or color it. We also discuss the animal names afterwards and point out the ones that have their speech sounds in it.
2. Use the included magical creatures flashcards. Read the description on the card to the students and they can guess which creature on their articulation page it is. Show them the card to see if they were right. The student will then practice the articulation word on the creature (the therapist will determine the number of trials). Have the student dot or color the creature after they practice. We also discuss the animal names afterwards and point out the ones that have their speech sounds in it.

Variations:

• Use as a drill page with bingo dotters while learning about mythical creatures (or can be used as a stand alone activity).
• Use it as a drill page while coloring (smelly markers make it even more fun).
• Place it in a page protector and use it as a play dough smash mat. Get creative and try to make the creatures out of play dough!
