This activity was designed to be a simple, no-prep activity to target language and vocabulary skills while playing with magnet tiles. It is a speech therapy toy companion! My students LOVE building with magnet tiles so I made a structured worksheet with their target objectives that can double as home practice to go with them!

This version includes the following skills: name the category, name items in a category, which one doesn’t belong, compare/contrast, wh questions (what, when, where, who, why, mixed), how questions, guess the word (from a description), functions, actions, positional vocabulary, past tense verbs (regular and irregular), plurals (regular and irregular), multiple meaning words (with and without picture support), antonyms/synonyms, and associations.

(Need language targets? Scroll down and see the articulation and language Magnet Tiles bundle listing).

I included three files (for different sets of magnet tiles and a blank one). Pick the file that goes best with the set of magnet tiles you own. If it doesn’t match up perfectly, just use the one that is closest and line up the tiles as best as you can or use the blank version. The blank version is blank in the middle so they can draw their creation when they are finished (and you can line up any tile on the page while practicing).

How to use: Tile outline pages: Print out a page for each student according to their target objective. Line up magnet tiles over the pictures on the page (stack them up). There are ten targets on each page, so  I recommend at least using 10 per student. The student will practice one of the target words on the page and earn a magnet tile. Depending on my students, I let them start building right away if they can handle transitioning from building to practicing. If they can not, I make pile of the tiles they earn and when they have practiced all of the targets,  I give them their pile to build with.

Blank in the Middle/Draw your creation pages: Line up random tiles on the page in the middle where it is blank. Practice the targets as described above. After they collect all of the tiles/practice all of the words, have them draw what they made and count the tiles. I like using this version with older students!

I included some building cards that you can print out and laminate for the students to build from or they can build whatever they want. When they are finished have them write in what they made. There is a note for them to take it home to review the targets at home and also tell their caregiver/family member about what they made with the tiles (make sure you leave a few minutes to give them time to make something at the end of the session).
