Penguin Gobblers for Speech Therapy ~ Articulation and Language No Prep One Page Craft

This activity was designed to be a simple, no-prep activity to target articulation and language while making a fun Penguin mouth craft.  It is also a GREAT way to encourage home practice because when completing crafts it creates the “look what I made” mentality which increases the likelihood that the student will show their caregiver and review. A quick caregiver note is included on the penguin. These can also be used as puppets for students to practice their speech and language targets with.

2 Versions Included!

1. Cut & paste targets to glue in the Old Lady’s mouth.
2. Coloring only (no paste) version with the targets already in the Old Lady’s mouth.

I created two versions for my students with different needs/interests.

How to use: The student will color and practice each target word. The student will cut out the words and practice them again. The student will cut out the penguin and fold it to make it a puppet. The student will glue each word/target in the penguin’s mouth and practice the word one more time! If you are working in groups, have the other students color their penguin in between turns. The therapist will determine the number or trials for the articulation page. I tell my students “make your penguin gobble up your speech words!”

Folding Instructions: Fold the top and bottom dotted lines away from you (backwards). Fold the middle line towards you (making the penguin’s mouth close). See images on the next page for a visual.

My hope is that this will encourage the students to show their parents and review their targets,  plus tell them all about the fun craft they made.

Tips from the SLP:

• Use with popular penguin themed books or games as supplemental activity that goes with the theme.
• To get more trials in, use a bingo dotter to dot the words (takes less time than coloring).
• To get extra trials, have the students use the penguin mouth as a puppet and say all the words it gobbled one more time!

This version includes the following sounds:  CVC/end sounds; initial/medial/final/mixed:  k, g, f, v, l, s, z, sh, ch, th,  lblends (initial/medial), initial sblends (sp, st, sm, sn, sk, sl, sw, mixed), final sblends; pre-vocalic r, er, or, ar, air, ear, & rblends (initial/final); 3 syllables/4 syllables/5 syllables, and complex clusters. I also included blank open-ended pages (12 targets on each page).

Please note: I added mixed phoneme pages to this pack! To target some phonological processes, I like to use the mixed position pages (example; mixed k for velar fronting, mixed s for stopping, etc..)

Language targets included: name the category, name items in a category, compare/contrast, wh questions (what, when, where, who, why, mixed), how questions, functions, actions, positional vocabulary, past tense verbs (regular and irregular), plurals (regular and irregular), multiple meaning words (with and without picture support), antonyms/synonyms, and associations (12 targets on each page).
