This activity was designed to be a simple, no-prep activity to target articulation in an engaging way. This version includes the following sounds: initial/final: p/b/m, final t/d/n, k, g, f, v, l, lblends, s, z, sblends (sp, st, sm, sn, sk, sl, sw, mixed, final), sh, ch, ,j , th, pre-vocalic r, er, or, ar, air, ear, ire, mixed vocalic r, rblends. I also included blank open-ended pages. (Need language targets? Scroll down and see the articulation and language Frog Launch bundle listing).
Over 140 pages (Color and Black & White)
Materials Needed: Launching pad mats, plastic hopping frog toy (not included), pond/lily pads (optional)
Optional: play dough, bingo chips, bingo dotters, crayons
Assembly: Low Prep! Print the launching pads in color, one sided. Laminate or place in sheet protectors (optional, not required). Use the black & white version for an ink friendly option.
Optional pond: Laminate the pond you want to use (large and small versions included). The largest one will have to be cut out, taped together, and then laminated as one large sheet. Cut out and laminate the lily pads if desired.
I bought the hopping frog toys on Amazon. You may also find them at Oriental Trading and some dollar stores.
To use: Set the launching pads in front of the student (by target phoneme). I do this activity on the floor to allow more hopping space. Place the ponds and/or lily pads across from the launching pads (this will be the target). Line up the plastic hopping toys over the frogs on the mat and review the words on the frogs (if you have enough, give each student different color). As they launch each frog (by pushing down on the tab on the back of the frog), the student will practice the word again in the circle (the therapist will determine the number of trials per frog, 10X per frog will = 100 trials). At the end of the round, your students will count how many of their frogs landed in the pond or the lily pads (you can make it a contest!). I suggest doing a couple practice hops to gauge the distance needed for the pond. Some of my older students assign points (1 point if it is touching the grass, 2 points if it is in the water, 5 points for lilly pads, etc…). Tip: If you have young students who can’t handle having all of the frogs in front of them (too tempting to launch all at once, hand them a frog one at a time on their turn.
Variations:
-
Play dough mats:. The student will squish play dough over each frog after they practice the target word.
-
Bingo chips: The students will place a bingo chip over each circle on the frogs as they practice the target word.
-
Bingo dotters: Dot & practice (great to send home after the session)
-
Boom Cards: This is a very simple drilling activity: slide the frogs into the pond and practice.
