I absolutely love using adaptive and interactive books in speech therapy sessions. I am currently building a wonderful library for my speech room! As my students progress I started searching for more specific concepts. When I couldn’t find exactly what I needed, I decided to create my own!
This book targets basic vocabulary contrasts (opposites) suited for PK-1st grade and special educaiton classes. The objective isn’t to teach the concept of opposites, rather an object+ feature objective using contrasts to make it more meaningful (although you can teach opposites with it if you want). I wanted my PK and K students who were past the object/action identification stage to have a more challenging objective. This is also great for students working on identifying attributes and categorization. The sentences with picture symbol support also can be used for language expansion or increasing MLU!
This book is great to use with AAC users!
Comes with 2 versions:
Print & Make Book: Assembly Required: Please note: No physical product is included. You will need to print the book page, laminate, and assemble pieces with velcro. Make sure you understand this BEFORE purchasing. Assembly instructions included in then file.
BOOM Card Digital Book: Digital interactive book (must have BOOM card account and internet connection, see instructions below).
To use: This book was designed to work on basic concepts and increase mean length of utterances. Read the prompts on the pages and have the students use the sentence strips to tell you what they see “I see ice.” “I see an elephant.” etc… The next page is an activity page where the students will match the feature to the picture (how does it feel, what size is it, how does is sound, etc…) out of a field of three. The next two pages expand on the concept and students have to find additional items with the same features (hot, cold, fast, slow, etc..). I use the activities listed on the included “Expansion Activities” card while we are reading the book. You can also come up with some of your own activities to help them carry over the skill. I highly recommend you do these activities, my students progress much faster when carry over activities are incorporated.
I have also included additional expansion activities on a handy card that you can laminate, velcro, and store on the back of the book.
