These pages are perfect for students who have mastered sounds at the word level and need a lot of practice at the phrase level.
This product was designed to help jump start carry over at the phrase/short sentence level. There are two files included, choose the best one for your student.
-
LEVEL 1-Static carrier phrases: There are a static set of five carrier phrases that are used with every sound position. I made them simple without a lot of demanding sounds, so they can focus only on the target word.
-
LEVEL 2-Sound loaded carrier phrases: Each sound position will have carrier phrases that contain words with the same sound/position. Some are very alliterative. The student will practice their target word but will also have to pay attention to the other words in the phrases with their sound. Expect most of the phrases to sound silly.
In both files, the target word changes positions in the phrases to get optimal practice.
I included commonly targeted phonemes for upper elementary: k, g, f, v, l, s, z, sh, ch, j, th, pre-vocalic r, vocalic r (separate pages for er, ar, or, air, ear, ire), sblends, lblends, and rblends. This does not include all phonemes. Level 1 contains separated sblends pages (sp, st, sm, sn, sk, sl), level 2 does not.
How I use these pages: I have the students color the squares at the bottom as they practice each word a the word level as a warm up. After that, the student will pick target sounds (squares) to put in each of the five carrier phrases. The student will then say each phrase, focusing on their target phoneme. After the first round, we will do many more rounds switching out the words in each phrase. Before the session ends, the student will pick the best word for each phrase and glue it in the squares. After that, they will pick the second best word for each phrase and glue it in the square to the right (under “2nd choice).
There is a caregiver note on the side of the page, this is to encourage home practice.
Expansion ideas:
-
Ask the student if each phrase makes sense. Some of them will sound very silly and its fun to discuss.
-
-
Some of the phrases may have new vocabulary words. Use this opportunity to teach new words. Watch a video or pull up pictures of the new word for students to make connections with.

A note about punctuation and grammar. Please keep in mind, this product was intended to get a lot of articulation practice at the phrase/short sentence level. These pages were not designed to be used for grammar or sentence structure lessons. You will notice that many of the phrases are not complete sentences. If you want to incorporate grammar with these pages, you can have the students write in the punctuation, correct any grammar issues, and fix capitalization (just have them write directly on the page).
